I tried to make a lolita capsule wardrobe

Sometimes, in my overstuffed lolita fashion wardrobe, I come across pieces I don’t remember buying or that I forget that I own. With more than 50 main pieces, I could practically wear a new coord every week without repeating. I want to learn to love all my pieces though! With that in mind I create a capsule wardrobe within my EGL fashion closet.

My capsule was inspired by the mini collages that Atelier Pierrot puts out in social media, typically including a mix of 4-5 main pieces, 2-3 out wear pieces, and lots of accessories.

Red and green

When building this capsule, I decided to narrow down my choices to reflect “fall.” I wanted lots of reds and textures to reflect the changing season. I immediately thought of my favorite Violet Fane skirt and bustier combo, which set the tone for the rest of the pieces I chose. My wardrobe has an unsurprisingly amount of red and a surprising amount of green!

Finding the pattern

As a mostly classic lolita, I would probably be happy with a whole wardrobe of just floral pieces. But I realize that might not give me a ton of coordinating options! I restrained myself a little, opting for just two floral pieces, plus a solid piece and a royal piece with a pretty subtle print. I’m of the opinion that floral accessories go with basically everything, so I wasn’t worried about my prints clashing with them.

Laying it on thick

I also want to make sure to pick pieces that I could layer. This lead me to pick the Nornen OP from IW. Even though it’s light and white, it’s a piece that would work as a blouse or underskirt. Another winning combo was the Axes Femme jacket and VF bustier. Despite being from different brands, they go together so well!

Double duty

For accessories, I wanted to make sure that they could all do double duty. My brooches all have alligator clips so they can go on clothes or in my hair. Plus, my Hello Mari necklace also has a pin back! For other hair accessories, I chose a Gobelin headdress and red beret, which matched everything pretty well.

Left out

As many people in my comments on social media were quick to point out, this capsule left a lot out, including leg wear. This was mostly because I didn’t want to have to photograph leg wear for my collage (it just doesn’t look very cute). I also didn’t include a bag or shoes. While I certainly own things I could add to this capsule, I wasn’t worried about showing all of them off in my collage. If I were packing this for a trip, I would opt for a pair of knitted ivory socks and floral printed tights, as well as a pair of brown strappy shoes.

Coordinates

For social media, I created a handful of coordinates with this capsule. I was delighted by how quickly and easily the coordinates came together. Obviously, to really change up my looks I would opt for different hairstyles, but I am pleased with these looks for about 10 minutes of styling!

Closing thoughts

This exercise was perfect for me. I wanted an excuse to shop my closet and this really scratched that itch. It also made a great starting point for a packing list for a lolita fashion trip. I would love to repeat this project with a different theme or goal in mind!
